Winery Ambiance
Located on
the Beamsville Bench of the Niagara Escarpment, Lakeview Cellars is
growing in leaps and bounds. Established in 1991 by Eddy Gurinskas and
his wife, Lorraine, Lakeview Cellars produced 2,300 cases that first
year. Growing to 22,000 in 2002 and with a capacity for 25,000 cases,
Lakeview strives to keep the small winery ambiance producing high quality
wines on which they base their reputation.
The partnership that comprised Lakeview includes, Tom Green, the winemaker,
Larry Hipple, the vineyard manager and Stu Morgan, the General Manager.
In November 2000 a new partner was added, Diamond Estates Wines with
Murray Marshall as president. This added financial and marketing capability
that has allowed Lakeview to invest in new equipment and expand into
10 of the 13 provinces and 4 varieties general listed with the LCBO
and recurring Vintage selections.
With the emphasis
on red wines, Lakeview is best known for Bordeaux varietals and Meritage
blends, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir and Baco Noir. The reds are full-bodied
wines, with rich fruit flavours and firm tannins that can be cellared
for many years.

Icewines
have opened the European market for Canadian wineries and Lakeview is
there, with Icewine currently being marketed in Japan, England, Czechoslovakia
and Duty free shops across Canada. Lakeview currently produces Riesling
Icewine, Gewurztraminer Icewine, Vidal Icewine and new this vintage,
Cabernet Franc Icewine. Another mentionable wine by Lakeview is Starboard,
a fortified Port style wine made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. All wines
at Lakeview are VQA including Starboard. This is an important aspect
to the Lakeview mission statement.
The winery boasts
a Retail Store with a 20 foot tasting bar, a private function room for
up to 70 people and a licensed patio, so visitors can enjoy a glass
of wine, light food, summer sunshine and the view of Lake Ontario over
the vineyards. Vineyard tours are available by reservation only. Take
a leisurely stroll through the vineyard while tasting four wines. This
is a casual informative tour that concentrates on the growing of the
vines.
